Field Service Technician

The Field Service Technician has the skills and the knowledge to install, service, and repair all Friesen’s Inc. automated processing equipment with moderate supervision or outside help. Service work may include, but is not limited to: performing routine maintenance, repairs, modification, equipment setup, or training of customer personnel. In addition, this position requires moderate travel to customer sites, availability to travel within 24 hours of notice, and around-the-clock ability to be reached via phone.

Responsibilities

  • Install, setup, repair, and troubleshoot automated processing equipment and resolve a high percentage of mechanical, electrical, and programming issues with some assistance, either onsite or remotely
  • Communicate effectively with field service advisors and engineers to resolve technical issues
  • Assist internally with assembly of automated processing equipment when not dispatched on a Field Service job
  • Self-starter: ambitious to stay focused on tasks that will benefit the company
  • Continuous education on company and industry products, programs, and processes; be proactive at learning new components and design principles as they are introduced
  • Document and photograph pertinent technical information as needed
  • Produce and submit very accurate and complete trip and expense reports in a timely manner
  • Always demonstrate good customer service skills; maintain a positive, professional relationship with customer personnel
  • Assist with the training of new technicians
  • Provide informal (hands-on) training for customer's employees
  • Proactively identify product / service sales opportunities at customer sites that will enhance customer's processes
  • PLC programming experience is a plus
  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures
  • Assist with related tasks and projects
  • Must be able and willing to travel up to 80% of the time to perform tasks at customer sites
  • Must have good mechanical and electrical experience in a manufacturing or production environment, preferably in the packaging manufacturing industry
  • Must have knowledge and ability to operate and communicate with automated machine controls
  • Must be able and willing to apply required customer service skills
  • Must have the skills to produce and submit complete and accurate trip and expense reports in a timely manner
  • Must be able to read and follow blueprints, machine drawings, and electrical drawings
  • Must be proficient with use of a laptop computer and related software
  • Must be able to use a variety of machines and hand tools
  • Must be able and willing to travel a minimum of 50% of the time

Skills & Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform all previous Technician levels as well as the following essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Have at least a high school diploma and 5+ years of demonstrated work experience in the manufacturing industry or related technical field or a minimum of a two-year technical degree in a related field and 2+ years of demonstrated work experience in the manufacturing industry.
  • Able to build an electrical panel from scratch without the help of others.
  • Able to run conduit / flex and pull wires on a Friesen’s equipment system.
  • Ability to use the stud welder with acceptable results.
  • Install J-boxes and button boxes on equipment as necessary.
  • Able to access a PLC in person and remotely and navigate the program successfully.
  • Able to modify and correct electrical schematics electronically.
  • PLC Programming (RSStudio5000)
  • Able to troubleshoot and understand basic PLC code.
  • Ability to add timers / counters to PLC program.
  • Able to add VFDs to the PLC program and set them up properly.
  • Basic understanding of PLC code and structure including where to find items (IO, Faults, Run Logic, etc.), understanding the program hierarchy (tasks, programs, routines, etc.), and understanding the common data types
  • Able to add Faults/Events to PLC programs.
  • Factory Talk Studio (HMI) Able to set up communications to PLC.
  • Basic understanding of parameter passing.
  • Able to troubleshoot tag / communications issues.
  • Beckhoff (Scales) Able to set up a scale (this will be a taught subject matter)
  • Able to setup I/O
